April 2016

2nd April 2016

We are proud to report that Michelle Hall has been appointed to the position of Associate Headteacher at St. Columb Major Academy. The appointment is on a one year, part time basis, while she continues to work part-time as Deputy Headteacher and class teacher here at St. Agnes. We will be recruiting a partner teacher to work with Mrs. Hall both in classroom and Deputy Headteacher roles, and when we do we'll be able to confirm class arrangements for next year.
Plans approved and proposed timetable of works

I am very pleased to inform you that on the 31st March we received confirmation that the planning application for the proposed expansion project of St Agnes Academy has been approved.

This permission has been granted subject to the following conditions:

  1. It must commence within three years of permission being granted;

  2. It must be completed according to the submitted plans;

  3. All the recommendations of the Framework Travel Plan must be implemented according to the agreed timetables contained in it;

  4. Any contamination discovered during the build must be investigated and a remediation plan must be approved by the Council and implemented;

  5. The works will not commence until plans have been submitted and approved for new shelters and enhanced crossing at the front of the school;

  6. The works must be carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the ecological impact assessment.

Cornwall Council will be working with the project managers and appointed developers to address these conditions to enable the works to proceed.

Meanwhile, we need to prepare our school to welcome another second Reception class in September 2016. In order to accommodate this new class within our existing school building, we will be receiving good quality temporary classroom space to accommodate KS2 children for the next academic year. This unit will sit in part of the staff car park and an area between the staff car park and the Key Stage 2 playground. Work therefore begins on Monday 4th April to prepare this area by removing a few trees (which will be replaced by the end of the project).

The next phase of the project is planned for the final half term of this academic year (at the end of May), when a fenced works unit compound will be set up in the area of the new temporary classrooms in which work will begin to excavate the bank and construct a retaining wall in front of the Key Stage 2 playground.

Work to create an access route to the area of the new building is due to commence at the beginning of the summer holidays. This will encroach on the current Early Years grassed outdoor learning area, which will be temporarily relocated for the duration of the build. The school kitchen will be refurbished over the summer holidays as well.

Work to extend the school hall will commence over the summer holidays, but will not be finished until the end of the autumn term. We will have access to the kitchen for school meals but will have to use other areas of the school for assemblies and to eat lunch in during this term. PE activities will be provided in other suitable spaces in the village. The enlarged school hall will be returned and ready for use from start of 2017.

Work to build the extension block will commence at the start of the summer holidays this year and the whole project should be complete by June 2017. The temporary classrooms, new building access route and Reception play area will then be removed and reinstated over the 2017 summer holiday period.

I hope that you will agree that this is an exciting time in the development of St. Agnes ACE Academy, and I'm looking forward to sharing future updates with you over the coming months.
