Student Voice

At St. Agnes ACE Academy, our pupils are very keen to learn and also to make a positive difference in their environment and community...

Together the Eco-Heroes and Gardening Club work hard to make the school a ‘green’ place in which to learn. The Junior Road Safety Officers help children think about safety. The School Council listens to and represents the views of the children in the school and suggests ways we can improve our school.

Junior Road Safety Officers

Over the year it will be the job of the Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) to help make everyone in the school and community more aware of the dangers of the road. Topics to be covered include: seatbelts, cycling, walking to school, parking outside school and many more.

School Council

The School Council represents the ideas of the children of our school. Our School Council is made up of two representatives from each year group, from Reception to Year 6. We meet regularly and get together with other School Councils once a year to share good ideas about what we have been doing.

The School Council gets involved in projects to improve the school. Recent projects have made the times that children are dropped off at and picked up from school safer and playtimes even better for children. We help the Junior Road Safety Officers and the Eco-Heroes with their ideas to make our school better.

At St Agnes our Eco-Heroes have achieved a lot in just four years; we are the proud owners of the prestigious Gold Eco Award. We have put up our own flag pole in front of our PV panels, so we can proudly fly our Green Eco Flag.

Each class elects two representatives for the Eco-Hero’s who have a very active role in school; meeting regularly to plan our next focus and raising our awareness about sustainability and encouraging everyone to be good at recycling and saving energy. We encourage good habits for the future.

Ongoing Projects:

  • Paper and card
  • Batteries
  • Textiles
  • Food for compost

Saving energy:

  • Switching off lights
  • Switching off ICT equipment, rather than leaving it on standby
  • Closing doors to keep heat in

Conserving resources:

  • Water saving with water butts
  • Taking care of our equipment so that it lasts well
  • Using resources in a way that minimises waste eg paper
  • Second hand uniform collections

Care for the environment:

  • Active scheme with the Junior Road Safety officers to encourage walking rather than using cars to travel to school
  • Using litter bins to keep our school and local area clean
  • Designing our garden and field to be a rich wildlife habitat
  • As a school we try to use local suppliers to reduce our carbon footprint

Along with the Gardening Club one of our main objectives for this year is to grow fruit and vegetables and sustain our raised beds. We have just put in place several new raised beds and every class now has a garden area to care for.

The Eco coordinator is Mrs Greenaway and Mrs Paterson is our garden coordinator.

Thank you for all your support and for working with the Eco-Heroes to keep moving towards a more eco-friendly school.
